And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. Colossians‬ ‭3:17‬ ‭KJV‬‬

What has 2016 been like for you so far? Have you met your goals? Finding yourself in a “too busy” routine? For me, the new year’s start held a focus on physical healing and preparation for surgery, the journey to which has been a turning point (read about it here). I really didn’t set other goals for 2016, and I continue my focus on rebuilding today.

Wherever we find ourselves here at the start of a new season, there’s no excuse for not giving thanks. It’s been a hard year so far on some fronts – loss, uncertainty, etc. But God still sits on the throne, always being faithful, always bestowing grace where needed. Our posture should be one of thanksgiving always, but what are some tangible ways to express thanks? How can your summer fun be built around a frame of gratefulness? Glad you asked…

Well, give thanks daily to Him who’s brought you through to this season. Be grateful for life.

Participate in church summer ministries. Show the Lord how thankful you are by serving beyond Sunday. Vacation Bible School, tutoring programs, activities for the elderly, etc., are all areas for helping others have an enjoyable summer.

Serve in your community. Who needs a fan? Anyone need house repair? If you have the means or skills, get to it! Love your neighbor as yourself…

Encourage someone directly. People are aching for love, for the pouring of God’s Word into their lives whether they realize or acknowledge it or not. Share your journey of His goodness and watch someone be inspired and hopeful for their own path.

Be intentional about the fun you choose. Some stuff is JUST.NOT.ADVANTAGEOUS. Be careful about where you choose to go and what you choose to participate in.

Be intentional about the people you choose to associate with in your fun. Goes along with the point above. Some don’t have your best interests at heart.

Live it up! Live life to the fullest! This ties up the points above. Enjoy the season – the long days, the warmth, gatherings with family and friends, etc. Before we know it, the cold of winter will have once again settled on us, so embrace and be thankful for these days.

Each morning you’re awakened to a new day, there ought to be praise on your lips flowing from thankfulness in your heart. We have an opportunity to serve a God whose blessings to us are immeasurable. Each day, in every season, give thanks – heartily, tangibly, fully.

Anything to add? What are some ways you can show thanks throughout the summer season?

  1. Melchee, if I had known how to contact you you would have received an invitation to my retirement reception on the 4th floor of Rosenau Hall this afternoon at 2. SC was kind enough to share this with me. Know that you are welcome if you get this in time. I trust that you are living life to the fullest and giving thanks every day. I try to. Warm regards, Jonathan
